Game 46 Recap
Hawks win on National Fry Day
In a high-scoring affair, the Boise Hawks emerged victorious with a 10-6 win over the Billings Mustangs. Both teams displayed offensive prowess, but it was the Hawks who capitalized on timely hitting and strong pitching to secure the victory.
The Hawks got off to a quick start in the first inning, with D.J. Poteet's double down the left-field line driving in Kenny Oyama for the game's opening run. Sam Olsson followed up with a single to right-center, bringing in Poteet and giving Boise an early 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs fought back in the second and third innings. Brady West reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Taylor Lomack to score on a throwing error by the third baseman, reducing the deficit to 2-1. In the third, Mitch Moralez's single to right field drove in Tyler Wilber, tying the game at 2-2. Lomack added a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Connor Denning home and giving the Mustangs a 3-2 lead.
Boise responded in the fourth inning as Eddie Arteaga reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on an error, and allowed Trevor Minder to score on the miscue, tying the game at 3-3. Kenny Oyama's single up the middle brought in Arteaga, reclaiming the lead for the Hawks at 4-3.
The fifth inning proved to be decisive as the Hawks exploded for six runs. Alex Baeza and Anthony Walters both singled, bringing in runs to extend the lead to 6-4. Oyama's single to shortstop and Derek Maiben's bases-loaded walk added two more runs, making it 8-4. Minder was hit by a pitch, forcing another run home, and Olsson's sacrifice fly to right field increased the lead to 10-4.
The Mustangs managed to score two more runs in the ninth inning, with Gabe Wurtz and Moralez each driving in a run, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Hawks' offensive onslaught.
Buddie Pindel started on the mound for Boise, pitching five innings and allowing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out five batters. Gavin Gorrell provided four innings of relief, giving up two earned runs on five hits and striking out four. Pindel earned the win, improving his record to 1-0, while Gorrell picked up the save, his first of the season.
Jared Kengott started for the Mustangs and struggled, lasting four innings and surrendering five earned runs on ten hits. Jalen Evans took over in relief and pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits. Kengott was charged with the loss, dropping his record to 0-4.
With this win, the Boise Hawks improved their record to 26-20, while the Billings Mustangs' record fell to 19-27.
